No one "needs" a vest, but some like it. DH, DS, and I all wear them. We hike a lot and walk most places so they're a great layering option when building up body heat in cooler temps.

I don't know why he would need a hood if it's warm enough that he doesn't need to cover his arms.

My kids have never had a vest. I've never had a vest. I don't really get vests, frankly.

I don't wear a vest with a short-sleeve shirt on and thus my arms are still exposed, I wear them as a layer over a long-sleeve shirt on days in the 50s, or under a shell type jacket when I want something windproof. My kids don't generally wear them.

I, an adult woman, just bought a sweater vest for me. I also own a puffer-style down vest. Vests provide warmth in the in-between weather.

Vests are good for when you need a layer but you're going to be moving around a lot. Also, for me I like the extra pockets to carry things in.

Your kid does not need a vest, but might like it. They pair well with a hoodie for 40-odd degree days.

So we did a fleece with a vest a lot when DD was in a car seat then a booster. She wore a fleece in the car snd if we were like just running to Target. But for being at a playground or going for a walk would throw a vest on when she got out of the car. Definitely gives more movement for playing than a think winter coat.

Puffer for my toddler. I think it allows him more movement. No hood. I agree, if it’s cold enough for a hood, cold enough fro a jacket or coat.

vests do keep your core warm so your arms more exposed is not an issue. I have worn them but rarely even bother. I think the last one I had disappeared years ago.

I think we may be the only vestless family on the schoolyard (exaggerating) but it seems like vests have broken out from nowhere and are on everyone at our child’s school.

I’m not a vest wearer because I feel like my arms would be cold but it does appeal to other people so maybe I should give it a try.
