Definitely a positive point in my book. Indicates the administration is thoughtful and really cares about students.

I would have no issue at all with a lockdown on mobile devices. Especially with all the recent news on the negative impact of social media on teens. Good for Banneker.

How do the two schools compare?

Hard to do a direct comparison because my child has been completely swamped with catching up on homework and tests from the first weeks of Walls. Things you probably already know: They both assign a lot of homework and tests; Walls has more sports and extracurriculars; the student bodies are very different racially and very similar in that they are full of hard-working, smart kids. Things you may not know (I didn't beforehand): Banneker assigned much, much more summer homework; Walls has significantly better communication with families; Banneker has an oddly strict dress code (e.g. no shorts); both school staffs seem overworked and perhaps overwhelmed.

Thank you for your perspective. I have found in my experience that Banneker’s administration is oddly strict about a lot of things that wouldn’t fly at a school like Walls.

Care to be specific?

Strict lockdown on mobile device access for one

Banneker has a similar program with Howard.

All DCPS High School students can apply for UDC - Cares and get up to 30 college credits before graduating hs. There are several colleges that offer these benefits to DCPS students.

Ok but people don’t take advantage of them because if the logistics. How are you going to get to this classes in the middle of the day? It’s not like you are right next to GW like Walls. I also bet they have a good working relationship which the other schools and colleges likely don’t.

When Banneker was at old location they were literally across the street. Many kids took 4pm/5pm/online or weekend classes. New location still very close via bus.

The new building is beautiful. It’s been a positive start so far.
