If in a relatively affluent or upper middle class demographic it is a red flag if you do not submit test scores. We have a college consultant and he said this was an issue last year with admissions

Need to include minority status. Schools have long sought to admit minorities without test scores. Lots of evidence that URMs benefited most from the new test optional policies last year.

I would love to know more real life experiences, as well.

This was part of a conversation in passing, so I don’t know what schools were involved, but a neighbor told my DH that their child tried applying test optional last year, and the DC received at least one call from a school asking if they had taken a standardized test, and making a request to see the scores, if they had. It would be interesting to know if others had this experience.
