I am a teacher supporter, but I have to say I am not impressed with one of my DC's teachers. Its this person's first year teaching and it's an advanced middle school course. The back to school night presentation was a little shocking - this person has a harsh personality and did not interact with the parents at all (just gave a speech and said goodbye). Not sure I would say anything to the principal but I'm bummed for my kid.

This is your evidence of a harsh personality? Maybe they were told not to interact with the parents at BSN after the Year from Hell for teachers. You sound like a Karen.

It’s a brand new teacher and it’s September. Every novice in every field makes errors. Also, “meh” means mediocre. Not harmful.

Why would you want to tell them they are not great at their jobs? Why would you tell anybody that? It’s not like it would improve their performance.

My son’s 2nd grade teacher was a terrible teacher, and I did have a conference with her. But it wasn’t to tell her that she was bad at her job and how she should change, it was to address the issues caused by her being bad at her job. I asked for more information about my child’s behavior in class and if it was okay, I asked for more information about how they were doing academically, and I requested better communication generally and that she check in on my son to make sure he was actually doing lexia rather than just goofing off during that time.

I was really nice about it all and I also said that I would work with my kid on some things at home to make sure school was a better experience.

Why would you be the person to tell them anything? That should come from her boss, which is not you.

I get this – my kid had a completely disappointing teacher one year. Starting with the first meeting, we knew it was going to be a year to be endured and nothing more. We allowed kid to vent frustrations at home, but made sure he knew to keep his head down and mouth shut otherwise. We didn’t say anything to anyone, not wanting to be Those Parents. I’m pro-teacher, but just like with everything, there are duds here and there. But OP’s “meh” doesn’t warrant complaints where a specific grievance might.

What sort of harm is being done? Are they physically at risk? Are they sobbing and refusing to go to school each day because they are being yelled at? Short of that...you don't really have an argument.

Yes, this, people have no idea the challenges teachers face.

I can’t imagine anything less constructive to the development of a new teacher than a parent offering this sort of feedback, particularly as we pass the 18-month mark in this pandemic.

What is your concern? If you don’t like the style or the approach, bite your tongue. If this involves student safety (physical or psychological), that’s different.
