How many miles is too many miles to buy used Macan?

My Consumer Reports Guide rates the Macan great for driving/handling, but so-so for reliability. Looks like you'd want to avoid 2016 or older models, which are flagged for engine and trans issues. Are you super settled on these two choices? They both get dreadful gas mileage for a daily driver, and if you're considering the Macan seems like you don't need as much cargo space as the 4runner would give you.

OP here

It would be a daily driver. No kids, but lots of toys like kayaks, snowboards, bikes.

I really want it to be able to take care of me on a road trip.

Porsches in general are rated very highly for reliability just under Lexus. The Porsche should be more reliable than the Audi even though they charge the same chassis as the Q5. Porsche has their own electronics and parts so it’s not just a rebadged car.

Our 2006 4Runner has been ridiculously good to us, so that gets my vote. But we don't use it as a daily driver. We needed a car that could tow.

You don’t want to know how much the Cayenne cost us in repairs. Get the Toyota.

Do you have kids or need space for backseat passengers ? We test drove the Macan and it was so small in the back so we passed but the cayenne was much better in that regards but above our budget.

Macan will be $2-3k every time you look. 4Runner? Crap.

Both of those cars are in high demand second hand. I’m in the market for a Macan too, but $35k is looking at a base model or a 2015 Macan S. Meaning you are looking at 30-40k mileage maintenance coming up.

If you couldn't stomach an audi, you won't be able to stomach a porsche. I've owned both. The macan engine is a VW group engine but then a bunch of premium frills above and beyond the quality of a Q5. And every single one of them costs. Just the straight labor cost at porsche is going to be higher. Brakes slightly more, wheels slightly more, everything slightly more. I love, and I mean love performance audis and porsches. But I only buy them new and I get rid of them after the 4 year warranty is up (or sometimes before). In the first 4 years they have virtually no problems... which is why the warranty lasts 4 years lol

Macan.

4Runner is amazing but a pain to drive day to day.

If you don’t off-road/go mudding then it isn’t worth it.

Okay, so I know these are very disparate choices.

I need a new car and I want to buy one used and probably stick around $35k.

Macan
Pro: I've always wanted a Porsche and they are fun to drive
Con: it's not going to be as reliable as a 4Runner. I have had an Audi and every sniffle that car ever had cost me $1k. And that put a very bad taste in my mouth for performance cars.

4Runner
Pro: so, so, so reliable and such a great workhorse. Toyotas are just such great cars I've also had a RAV4 at the same time as the Audi and the RAV4 has never had anything but an oil change and it has been 100% and that car is 20 years old.

Cons: they just aren't fun to drive. I don't feel like it has much power and the steering just feels loose. And they're kind of ugly these days.

I feel very torn between the practical 4runner and the fun of the Macan.

WWYD?
