My child with slightly higher stats is applying to several of the schools on your child's list. My kid is also applying to some Ivy type reaches and a few other schools we can't afford, but are closer matches like Clark, Case Western, WPI, Oberlin, Lafayette. My kid's interests are STEM and music. Cost is an issue for us.

OP here- thanks for the replies. My kid doesn’t want SLAC. Will be undecided major. Doesn’t care much about where they go to school but friends are making it difficult with their attitude. My older kid with higher SAT 1550+ 15 APs was rejected from harvard, Stanford mit, Carnegie mellon etc. so this list for kid 2 seems more realistic to me

Mine was similar stats applied to basically the same schools as above. Would have loved to have tried an Ivy adjacent but we would be full pay and think spending 80k per year is crazy.

If you want more personalized attention, you might be able to get merit at SLAC. Mine wasn’t interested as she thought she’d have to go too far “down the list” to get good merit

With that high of SAT, and a great GPA you can get plenty of merit aid. Especially at out of state publics.

agree with this... the OP's kid needs to add some more on the target/reach side.

The list is only “meh” if it doesn’t excite your kid. They should apply where they want, to schools where they think they will be happy.

If they’re holding themselves back based on some perception that they can’t compete at more highly ranked schools—and they find those more highly ranked schools appealing—that’s different.

The point is, what your friends think on this topic doesn’t matter (and could be actively harmful). What matters is what your kid thinks.

Where is your kid with similar stats applying to?

That is a great list. What does your kid want to study and what is he or she looking for? Is cost an issue?

These read as safeties other than UMD

Think you should aim higher. What does he want in a school? Interested in studying?
