It was less expensive this summer. I paid less than that for a suite for the 4th of July. It was a good choice for what I wanted - an escape from DC life. There are nicer places elsewhere but honestly options in the DC area are generally terrible and overpriced. I did not want to fly with an unvaccinated kid or sit in traffic for hours, so my options were limited. Not everyone wants to spend a week at the beach or has the time to spend to fly to the south of France.

The same thing happened with Nemacolin. I think a lot of people who couldn’t fly due to covid went to these resorts and alas, the price increases.

I would not pay more than $600/night for the salamander.

The deco is so early 1970's! Very worn now. Needs a substantial update. I think they are trying to get in the green after so many 2020 covid cancellations. I would not pay a penny over 250/night. The "fireplace" is a lame insert.

We stayed there about 2 years ago. Nothing much to do or see. Was not worth the price at all. We had much better food down the road. Don't eat there.

So who are the people willing to pay that amount? Because the hotel isn't trying to have a bunch of empty rooms - if no one was paying, they'd lower the price.

I've never been, but I wouldn't be one of those people willing to pay.

+1 my parents just came back from two weeks in the south of france. Place was (comparatively) empty for September. My boss just extended her vacation there for another week for the same reason — too good to pass up.

This is why we aren't going anywhere this fall. All prices have gone up across the board, especially for nearby resorts and rentals.

And there’s plenty of happy people on TripAdvisor leaving good reviews. Ashame they don’t realize they are being taken for a ride lol. For that amount of money no welcome glass of champagne? No evening cocktail happy hour? No complimentary fresh cookies or scones? The Salamander doesn’t even try to give decent value which is a slap in the face as they laugh at fools throwing away money. By the way when I stayed, many of the local Middleburg folks freely roamed the grounds and enjoyed the exclusive Salamander evening s’mores fire pit for free with a bottle of wine from a local vineyard lol. I’m sure they laugh at those paying $1400 a night just to rest their head.

It’s nearly a crime what the Salamander "Resort" is charging for a room nowadays. I stayed there 4 years ago and the rates were somewhat reasonable. I paid about $420 a night on a weekend trip for their Grand Estate King room with Fireplace. The room was nice and the grounds were nice however I didn’t feel like there was much to do (pretty much just a nice spa and walking around) and it was small. I just looked at what they are charging for the same room and it’s $1400!!! Is this a joke? Are people really suckers for this price? This seems excessive. Even if they included daily breakfast, dinner, and a spa treatment it still wouldn’t be worth it. Is the resort doing that bad and price gouging to make up the deficit?

This place is totally not worth it for that price. You are paying $1400 for their basic room (which is basically a suite at a chain hotel) and then you’ll get nickel and dimed for the other "resort" amenities, food, drink, spa etc. Are folks really paying $4000 to spend a weekend at the Salamander?
