Vienna Behavioral Health. Dr. Rizvi is who I saw for a diagnosis.

As your GP for a script, you'll know immediately or almost immediately if it's going to help you.

Many GPs won't prescribe ADHD medication without a full neuropsych eval, which can run in the thousands since insurance rarely covers. This happened to my husband.

Mmmm...not my experience. But my GP knows my whole history and has been my GP for many years, so probably feels safe that I won't abuse stimulants which I do not. I use them M-F only, and sometimes not even then.

Adult psychiatrist for me. But it was a huge task finding one who took my insurance, was accepting new patients, etc. There seems to be a shortage in this area.

Yes! I could not find one who took my insurance.

Are you looking for someone in DC, Maryland, or VA?

VA. Vienna/McLean area preferably.

I see Dr. Jack Seed in Fairfax. He has to be near or past retirement age but I like him a lot and he takes my insurance (BCBS). I think he's doing all his appointments virtually right now.

Adderral (sp?) helped me quite a bit for this. I noticed an immediate change in my level of attention and significant decrease in procrastination, which helped me tremendously at work.

I have noticed a HUGE difference in my 17 year old's procrastination. She just started Adderral last month and it's made a world of difference. She would always get her schoolwork done but usually after some major procrastination and late nights. She's done a 180 this past month.

We saw a psychiatrist for the diagnosis. Not in the DC Area so my rec probably won't help. We found someone who only practices virtually which makes the appointments a lot easier.

ADHD isn't just a problem of "focus" or "distraction." You sound like you could use some better resources for ADHD generally. I don't mean that unkindly, I just think it might be useful to understand what ADHD is and isn't, to help you on your journey.

You might start with ADDitude magazine online, if you haven't already.

To answer your question, yes, stimulant meds help with basically all aspects of ADHD, including executive functioning. If you have an ADHD brain, they don't hype you up and they don't tend to lead to hyperfocus on "unproductive" things-- which tends to be a feature of ADHD itself.

I have (very consciously!) developed decent enough executive function skills over many years that in a vacuum, I wouldn't absolutely need stimulant meds most days for that (although it's still helpful). At this point, I primarily take them for emotional overwhelm and ADHD-related anxiety.

Meds help, but you still need to learn behaviour skills.

Like, insulin and Metformin help diabetics (depending on type), but they still need to control their diet and lifestyle appropriately.
