As long as your GK is regularly practicing with their teammates and working on foot skills, passing, etc. during practice (and outside of practice), they should continue to develop. Passing drills and small-sided games are great places for your kid to get "field" touches outside of games.

Second, the reason why GK coaches recommend field playing time at younger ages is because young teams don't play through the keeper like older teams do. If your kid's team plays out from the back and through the keeper (like they should be doing at u13) your keeper should be getting a lot of "foot" touches during the games. If they don't -- that could be a sign to look for another club/team.

Of course, getting field playing time when your keeper is not in goal is ideal, but it sometimes isn't feasible as the keepers get older. While the adage that the keeper should "at least be able to make the team as a field player" is true, "make the tam" and "play regularly" are very different things as things get more competitive.

Finally, I'm not sure I fully agree with the GK coach's reasoning on field playing time. I've always been told play in the field to develop footskills. Playing in the goal in game and game-like situations allows the keeper to best develop their sense of how plays develop and where dangerous shots and crosses come from, with the added advantage that they see it from the right perspective and get to learn from their successes or failures in reacting to that situation. While seeing the play develop from the other perspective (ie as the attacker) could be helpful, I don't think its an experience keepers necessarily need on a regular basis.

+1. I agree with this poster. Time in goal is REALLY important for the GK to develop good instincts and practice GK skills they are learning in training. You only get so many shots on goal to practice these skills during a game. My kid would play as a guest player for tournaments on occasion so he could get some field time in.

There are lots of disadvantages to specializing in goalie. I'd be realistic about what your kid wants to accomplish and how good they are in goal and on the field. Very easy to become 2nd string goalie in HS and never get to play.

My child is the same age and his coach requires field players to do 30 minutes of running a day, 50 push ups, 50 sit ups, and 50 burpees.

Do the kids actually do this?

What would you do? Let him just play in the goal? Tell the kid to ask for field time? Talk to the coach? Have his GK trainer talk?

The first thing I would do is talk to your son and find out what he wants. Is he happy in goal, or does he want to play in the field. FWIW, my son is U14 and has played on two of his club's top teams over the past two years. Both teams had dedicated goalies who did not play in the field. So, I think it is not that uncommon. But, if you want your child to be in the field, and they want that too, and you were promised that, you need to talk to the coach - WITH, and not for, your child, at this age.

I wonder if you child is on my son's team. If so, he is a really good GK, and the other GK is not nearly as good. I am sure that is why your son was in goal the entire time. It doesn't solve your issue, but the other players do appreciate what your son does for the team, if you are the person I think.

My kid now U18/19 is a GK
We were specific about what our expectations were and it was discussed with each coach. She earned her time accordingly. Have a chat with the coach. Nothing wrong with wanting to play field and GK at that age. Dont get pushed into a position.

Be prepared for limited field time if you kid is not strong enough to hold down a field spot.

All i'd say is speak up, both you and your kid. Be clear about your intentions of developing the players skill set

I guess where I am frustrated is that we were very clear about what we wanted. We wouldn’t have said yes to this team if they hadn’t assured us he would play field too.

Unfortunately, your desires don't matter when in a club that values winning. Sorry

OP, I'd start by having your kid talk to the coach.

Your concern is valid.

OP here,

I think the coach is prioritizing winning over developing my kid as a player. Which I am sure is common. Just not sure what to do.

I assume that is the reason, yes.

My U13 player likes the goal, and participated in goalie specific practices and trainings. But his goal keeper coaches are adamant that he needs to play both in the field and in the goal to develop his skills, because long term playing the field will lead to him being able to anticipate where the ball is coming from and direct the defense.

He is on a new team this year and when I talked to the coach before accepting I was told that he could play half the game in goal, and in the other half he would play whatever time he “earned” on the field. But in reality, the coach had him in the goal for either the whole game, or all but a few minutes every game.

What would you do? Let him just play in the goal? Tell the kid to ask for field time? Talk to the coach? Have his GK trainer talk?
