No need to be so rude, frustrated contractor man. You must lose a lot of business to them.

No, he's right. There are so many dishonest people in this business. If you had done an ounce of research, you'd have known not to go with them. Sorry for being harsh, but I hope it's a lesson learned for next time, OP. The most responsible contractors are ridiculously expensive, but at least you have a lot more peace of mind. You can NEVER trust anyone, mind you. You must always inspect as much as you can!

The ridiculously expensive contractors are also crooks as they pay their workers the same as everyone else

In discussions with a few real estate agents (we still need to move) it turns out that this is not uncommon for them. Unfortunately, it wasn't something we turned up when talking to the references provided.

I was always clear that our budget was firm, so this was definitely not a case of me demanding more during the process. In fact, I brought up my concern around costs on more than one occasion.

I am not sure if OP is still around, but I would like to know how the story ended. According to the contract they have to provide ways to cut the cost. Your budget was supposed to be written down in the contract. Are you looking the money you paid for the design or moving forward to the updated budget?

Not contractor man. Living next door to extremely dissatisfied Classic Homes neighbor. Something always failing on the home. They are
now resigned to sell in this sellers market and pass on the headaches to the lucky purchaser.

But hopefully, the next person will keep complaining to you and then you can tell them the Seller knew of all the problems and committed fraud by not disclosing them. Or maybe it's really YOU who has all the problems. The post wasn't a pity post and my guess is the person doesn't care if you're sorry. It was about how they wont' build because the price of the design is more than agreed, not that it's too low.

Ok, Jan... I mean, OP. 🙄

Never understand why people feel the need to announce this, even if true.

Sorry you're going through a crappy situation, OP. Thanks for posting the warning.

How was contract written.

I recall I did a home renovation and he guaranteed his costs of labor but material cost and subcontracting costs were variable. Usually not a big deal but if my project was today lumber, copper, subcontractors are way up.
