If Waples Mill is your base school, why wouldn't you send your kid to Franklin with his/her neighborhood friends? Franklin has had an outstanding AAP program for about ten years.

I do not know about Franklin’s AAP. Carson’s academic is fairly rigorous. They have homework almost every day, for an hour or so.

Franklin isn’t a center.

How is that relevant? Franklin has had an exceptional LL4 AAP program for many years. Center or not, it is a strong program.

I think it's kind of terrible that the Waples AAP kids get stuck in such a crazy split feeder situation. Only a very small group of friends will be at the same elementary school with them before and after the AAP split, then again in middle school, and then they go to a different high school than most of the rest of their new Carson middle school friends.

That's partially why we sent our two younger AAP kids to Franklin for AAP. It only splits into two middle schools-- Chantilly and Oakton. Our older kid went to Carson and it split into at least four high schools, which was mind-boggling. We took a gamble with our middle kid, not knowing anything about Franklin, but we woumd up thinking it was a much stronger AAP program than Carson's program, so our younger AAP child also went to Franklin. Their AAP seventh grade teachers were some of the best teachers we have encountered. The civics teacher is also an excellent teacher. Both kids had him and we were impressed with what he had students do.

Our fourth child is much younger, still too young for AAP, but they are at Waples Mill now. If they are found eligible for AAP, we will probably keep them at WMES and just do L3 services. We have been happy with WMES!

For families that chose to stay at Waples, have you been happy with the Level 3 services and advanced math?

Because all their AAP friends and classmates since the 3rd grade have been with them at Hunters Woods and are going to Carson. I have one child at the Hunters Woods center and another in AAP at Waples Mill. The Waples kid only gets AAP time on Fridays, maybe an hour, with all the other 3rd grade AAP kids. But none of her friends were going to Hunters Woods and she is happier staying at WM. Honestly, it's just elementary school and they hardly have any homework ever - either of them. I supplement with workbooks off Amazon 15 minutes a night maybe 3 times a week and that seems to teach more than they are doing at school. At school all they do is prep for whatever SOL or iReady or whatever is next.

Maybe there will be a difference once middle school starts? I don't have any experience with that yet.

Hi,

We have a 3rd grader in Mosaic for AAP (center school) but plan to buy a house this year, likely not districted for Mosaic. A lot of the houses we see are slated for Waples. From what I can gather, there is no local L4 program and the kids ca go to Hunter Woods in Reston. Curious if anyone on here has an AAP-er and stayed at Waples? Do they offer anything differentiated?
