It is a negotiation to get the other country to reduce its tariffs.  If you place tariffs on things they don't export, they have no incentive to reduce tariffs.[/quote]

Most favored nation status is just another reason why this is the absolutely worst way to do things.

We're supposedly trying to get other countries to lower their tariffs.  Putting aside the fact that these "reciprocal" tariffs aren't reciprical and aren't based on tarrifs.  If countries lower their tariffs in response to this they aren't lowering them just for American imports. Because of MFN they are also lowering them for everyone else.  Congratulations, we've just become the bad guys in order to benefit China.[/quote]
