I'm shocked the teachers don't have a text or intranet system of some sort to warn them of danger without alerting the students. All that needed to happen was a mass alert to staff "where is alston?"
One of the articles said that was how he was found -- texts were sent to the teachers of his picture with a question about whether he was in their classroom. I'd imagine the teacher who got the text and thought "Oh, crap, that was one of the kids I pulled in out of the hallway when the lockdown was called" was pretty shaken. I'm also wondering why the kids who saw him throw the gun under a chair didn't say something but maybe they were too scared to have Alston see them alert the teacher. That is, I think, different than not calling for help when there's a kid bleeding out on the floor. Or maybe they really didn't see if he was sneaky enough about sliding it under someone else's stuff. There are a lot of unanswered questions here, including why it took 2 hours to find him.
The photo I saw looked like it had probably been tucked underneath his backpack.
Thus has been an issue I have brought to the BOE and central office's attention MANY times. Some schools in this area are scary. My DD and DS attend blake hs and are always coming home with stories. Kids smoking in the bathrooms, kids being bullied in the bathrooms, kids being disrespectful to teachers, kids fighting and staff refuses to get involved. Just today a.group of kids inane class were tossing a Gatorade bottle around during class. These are the kids no one messes with. The teacher is powerless and afraid to get in the middle of it and just ignores it. How is that for a great learning environment? My DDs friend was smacked in the head by a kid because she glanced at him and he assumed it was because of his hairstyle. One kid calls the french teacher a pussy every day! This is the environment at some schools. Kids are out of control and they need to be removed if they can't behave. My kids want to go to another school but obviously can't and we're hoping for virtual so they don't have to deal with all these behavior issues that just keep happening. I would love for central office and boe to pop in a surprise visit and go to a few classrooms and I'm not talking the AP classes. It's time to cut the.social justice, restorative justice and discipline these kids or put them in a special school.
