There are fascinating articles about his alignment with Turkey model (Erdogan) and Islamic brotherhood, and how that differs from monarchical Islamic states like SA. It would be great if people knew a little more about what they are investing emotion in. It goes without saying that consulates should be protected spaces and what happened is a travesty, but while he was residing and opining in the US I would not say his core values or aspirations were aligned to much of our foreign policy.
First of all, let's dispense with the notion that any one of us knows what Jamal Khashoggi's "core values of aspirations" were. Second of all, if you're making an argument that the U.S. ought to support monarchical Islam (because these states toe the foreign policy line the U.S. charts) and disdain political Islamist parties that rose to power through popular vote (because they can god forbid have a mind of their own and oppose what the U.S. does), you aren't being very close to the U.S. core values, either. Or should I say, "core values." Because the U.S., despite paying lip service to democracy, has only been OK with brown people voting for as long as they vote for the right person. Chew on that for a bit.
The opinion piece, which seemed reasoned and informative, drew a position on his stance favouring "republican Islam" from his words and history of action. Did you read the article? I do not think monarchical Islam is aligned with American values though it is with some of our regional interests (for now). That's part of what makes our foreign policy in the middle East and gulf fraught and difficult. We are truly caught between a rock and a hard place - but kashoggi didn't offer some 3rd, alternative. He was very much part and product of the republican Islamic stance according to this piece - ie, the Turkish model of government under Erdogan that has also rolled back many freedoms and gains . Why do you think he was in Turkey, just from curiousity?
