Kimmel's show brought in more than $70m in ad over-the-air ad revenue for ABC. That does not include Disney and Hulu revenue, does not include revenue from the 20 million youtube subscribers, does not include internatonal licensing, merchandising, sponsorships and so on. Meanwhile the $100-120m production cost claimed is exaggerated. So, he wasn't losing them massive amounts of money as claimed. But that said, with this move, ABC and Disney are already seeing massive losses, from a loss of over $1.5 billion in market cap and close to $100m in subscriber exits. This is a big loss for ABC and Disney. A corporate crisis.
There was some discussion of this on the Colbert thread but th se late night shows are something of a loss leader for the entertainment companies because about half of their purpose is to promote other content —- eg anyone with a new movie or show will go on the late night circuit and it is great advertising that is much cheaper than the alternatives. So they are outsourcing some of the advertising cost for their movie companies or for other shows onto the late night shows. Kimmel talks about the bachelor a ton and probably doubles the people watching that show. Disney is very very good about cross pollination of promotion across their various platforms so Kimmel is helping them earn money even if his show is losing it (which it’s not clear that it is).
