Who the heck is Sarah Goodfellow?? I Googled her and found nothing. I looked on Instagram and see a regular looking mom with a couple thousand followers whose profile is set to private. That's so irrelevant. Let's stick to Jen Hatmaker, Jamie Ivey, and people we've at least heard of
Sarah is in that group of internet besties that Howerton cobbled together, along with Bessey, Jen, Tara, and Jamie. She is the granddaughter of Gerald Ford. She married young, started her family, and had a similar discomfort with raising Christian kids in the uber-affluence of North America. She and her husband sold everything and moved their four young kids to a poor area of Lima (Pacifica)to manage a branch of Krochet Kids as a way to bring employment to the community. I found her via her blog, But Now to Live the Life, which is archived and found in bits across the internet. This was all concurrent with Jen's "Interrupted" period. Sarah blogged pretty regularly and candidly about the challenges and gifts of life as an expat in Peru. Her kids went to local schools, and that was a challenging and interesting endeavor for them on so many levels. It was a fascinating glimpse into a life few people take on willingly. I was so inspired by her actions. She even had Dooce and Jamie Wright visit her, along with Howerton, but it was criticized by many as "povvo tourism" (oh the nomenclature of the mid 2000s message boards). Riley, as the oldest daughter, bore the brunt of the challenges of the move, and had to deal with the prejudice of being a white, affluent kid in a South American school. But she eventually thrived. Now, she is trying to find her way as a young adult, and it's a tough road. I brought the Goodfellows up on this thread because of Jen's friendship with them and also their parallel paths in life, trying to serve the poor and marginalized. Also, I am interested to see how the kids of these mom blogger/influencers fare, as I think that atmosphere is so toxic to families.
