+1 I'm thinking this might be the real issue.

OR, the kid doesn't want to go and the mom can't get him to see the value of going there (because so many kids nowadays don't really get the value of money--so many are not working after school these days, they are doing sports or homework.  They don't really grasp the value; they just think they'll take out a loan or whatever; they've never taken on a financial responsibility.  Or, if the mom is not financially savvy (and from Op's post it doesn't sound like it), then SHE also doesn't understand the value of money; ah, she thinks they'll just take out another loan.  It could be the combination of factors--low grades, and/or lack of interest in the college, and/or not understanding the value.  And a fourth thing could be a tad of rebellion--people often don't appreciate what they are given.[/quote]
