I wish I could remember which book this was, but there's a whole scene in a Milan Kundera novel where the college student protagonist goes with his older girlfriend to a bar, and is humiliated that she is wearing heels when all the women his age are in flats. It marks her as being old and dowdy, that she is in formal shoes, while the others are in their youthful footwear.

Point being that not everyone looks great in heels and sometimes flats are better.
