What is happening here, why are we stereotyping and bashing Russian people? This thread is disgusting.
We aren't bashing Russian people. We are discussing gender role expectations, differences, and the accuracy of stereotypes (or in accuracy). I started thinking about these cultural differences right about the time I was walking through the Euromaidan area in daylight; each night, the place erupted into violence, but in the daytime fighters on both sides crept into their tent villages and slept, and "normal" people came out to walk through the area to work, keeping close eye on the ranks of Berkut police who stood in weary lines, shields raised. One day, I looked down and noticed blood splatters frozen among the ripped up cobbles, and watched a Ukrainian woman lead her backpacked children over the area on the school run; none of them stopped to remark about the blood at all because it was just day-to-day life here. Russian soldiers were stationed in random places throughout the city, even as Western media speculated about whether or not "the Russians" were actually in Kiev at all; one day, I dropped a grocery bag in the street and a Russian soldier who had been standing in the same place each day on that corner for weeks leaped into the street and picked up all of my apples, then handed them to me silently and went back to his post. Then our nanny rushed after him and started shouting abuse at him because "I left Russia for new life, and they will never let Ukraine go now they are here." Then all hell broke loose and friends' sons started to be called up in the draft to go fight four hours from where I live, where there is AT THIS MOMENT bloody fighting still going on as Russians and Ukrainians fight on in a war that is, for some reason, no longer remarked upon in Western media at all, as if it isn't important, or as if the West knows the end is inevitable here. So the topic that comes up at every gathering in which Ukrainian and Russian citizens of this city socialize is: what are the fundamental differences between Ukrainian/Russian culture/mindset and those of the West? It's kind of on my mind. I'm writing a novel set here as well, which you would hate, PP.
