I recommend an HHI of at least 150K per child.
Too high. I think 75k HHI per kid is plenty. We have 4 and HHI is $300k and we drive paid off cars, live in Virginia, and send kids to public school. One beach vacation and one ski vacation a year.
WTF?? We have four kids and make 100k combined. We live in the DC area. Our car is paid off and we go on vacations. 150k per child? 75k per child? You guys are nuts.
Nuts is right!! Your family sounds just like our family. Four kids, income 120K, cars paid off, vacations, activities etc.
I'd love to know how you make this work! We're in DC, our HHI is just over $200k, and I can't stop panicking about how we are going to have zero money when our baby comes later this fall and we have to start paying for childcare. We're pretty thrifty too - very rarely eat out, don't have cable, buy clothes sparingly, coupon and shop the sales at the grocery store, have one 10 year old (paid off) car. We haven't been on a "vacation" since before we got married - we occasionally travel (mostly by car) to do a long weekend with friends/family here and there, or fly to attend the occasional wedding, but that's it. How do you save for college, retirement, etc?
