Why is that OK? I completely disagree with you. There is no reason to tell a five or six year old into thinking that s/he is a valuable member of the team if s/he has not put in the same amount of effort that other kids have. That's what participation trophies do.  "You're all so special."

You're a gem, aren't you.  When they're 5 or 6, sometimes those kids who "don't want to be there" are feeling really shy or anxious about trying something new.  And getting out there and trying it *is* an accomplishment for them.   When they're 9 or 10, it's different.  But at that age they don't care about the participation trophy anyway.[/quote]
