I agree with the above comment that complimenting someone as "professional/smart/well dressed/well spoken [i]for a black person[/i]" is offensive, because it clearly suggests there's some lower norm of quality among black people. But by contrast, complimenting someone as "professional/smart/well dressed/well spoken [i]for a teacher[/i] (or for an accountant/auto mechanic/florist)" is not offensive. And IMHO it's non-offensive even if the teacher (or accountant/auto mechanic/florist) happens to be black. But that said, there'll always be someone who is prepared to take offense at even the most innocuous comment.[/quote]
