Amazing....all I hear in this thread is ignorance and prejudice from a group of people claiming to be so enlightened and liberal. I don't think close-mindedness follows state borders, seems we can find plenty of it in DC and MD.
"Enlightened and liberal" does not mean we have to automatically approve of your state's shitty social and economic policies. We've seen the results and it's a bigoted, fascist disaster. VA is a good ol' white boy shithole with an overreaching government.
You are missing the point. The point is that the average NoVa dweller probably has the same opinion about Richmond's policies as you do. But they are able to look past it because they are pragmatists and they realize that NoVa has a lot to offer and most of those policies, and the political culture behind them, don't affect them anyway. Same with a lot of people living in Austin, TX. It is one thing to disagree with a state's politics, another to refuse to live there because of them (your choice) - but another entirely to judge people who choose to live in a state, as if they are somehow supporting those policies by living there. That's silly. That's stereotyping, like assuming that everyone in DC is black and democrat. For what it's worth, I live in DC, and I think some of the policies and proposals in DC are really stupid (just look at what they are trying to do with public schools right now), and I think the govt suffers from corruption and incompetence, and as a result is possibly worse than the VA govt. But I still choose to live here for various reasons, and I try to change what I don't like at the ballot box.
