I've been crying about "Cat's in the Cradle" since the first time I heard it when I was about 8. (I was a sensitive child.) There was also a song about some kind of whizzing, buzzing toy that also made me cry.
The Marvelous Toy, by Tom Paxton? I actually think it's a very sweet song, sort of the opposite of Cat's in the Cradle - I do react emotionally to it, but more happy than sad. Kid gets a magical little toy from his Dad, loves it his entire life, and eventually gives it to his own son. We have a picture book version of this song, really fun to read with the kids. "It went zip when it moved, bop when it stopped, and whirrr when it stood still ... I never knew just what it was, and I guess I never will". Tom Paxton has several tearjerkers, though. Check out The Bravest, about firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 - told from the point of view of someone who was saved by them. "Now every time I try to sleep, I'm haunted by the sound of firemen pounding up the stairs while we were running down". Sends chills down my back every time I hear it.
