I have not visited Los Angeles, and have spent most of my adult life in this area so I cannot comment on this one way or the other, but -- is Los Angeles really as dangerous and violent as Iraq?  If so, shouldn't the media report more on this deterioration of a U.S. City?  I was thinking of taking my family on a vacation there, but perhaps I should not?[/quote]

Like the LA poster you are conflating Los Angeles the city, and the particular neighborhood under discusion - South Central LA.  The later is dangerous.  Hollywood, Westwood, Santa Monica etc. not a problem to visit.  reminds me of a neighbor who heard of all the violence in Mexico and asked if she should cancel her vaction plans for Cancun.[/quote]
