The “infamous Brearley dad” was one of a few people who got NYC private school boards to stop and ask themselves whether “woke’ism” has gone overboard. The schools might not have admitted their mistakes in public but many of them came back to their senses and scaled back on pseudo-DEI programs. FWIW, I have actually thought that Brearley was also retreating from woke’ism (based on what I am hearing from other parents). It is places like Fieldston that still appear stuck in 2021.
I can’t take any commenter seriously that has decided to misdefine “woke.” Woke is simply encouraging people to remain current on what’s going on in the world; to pay attention to things that could impact you. How that has become a negative is beyond, beyond.
The meaning of words evolves over time. It has been happening throughout human history. "Woke" in 2025 no longer means just "encouraging people to remain current". Its primary meaning has become negative because too many ultra woke advocates used this word to virtue signal and silence anyone who asked questions that even remotely challenged the gospel of pseudo-"DEI".
This right here sums up the poster who has been spamming the board with the negative Brearley stuff. Sounds exactly like the Brearley dad, whom this poster admits he thinks was right. I'd take everything with a grain of salt. If you'd prefer a more conservative school, that's fine, but if you truly have kid in the lower or middle school you should have known it wasn't for you when you applied. Most NYC schools are not bastions of conservative, alt-right thinking like you seem to prefer. Somewhere in the sticks (like the Brearley dad chose) may be better for you.
