The way people see elite admissions really only makes sense to me if you're an academic: the brightest need to be in academia to invent new ideas in a publication 4 other academics will read and occasionally give us back a return on our investment in their abstract research projects. A lot of these kids go into jobs that don't require the brightest minds, particularly consulting and IB, but they're great places to start a decent career. Frankly, when I think of the merit admissions crowd, I just imagine the most unsympathetic individuals who are controlling our institutions (Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, Joe Lonsdale, Alex Karp...). They don't actually have visions, just people they want "out" of the system. It's unnerving.[/quote]
