Thinking about it as a political issue. What do you think the proper justification is for it, if any?
Most of the reasons given, including on this board, is rooted in taste or want. I don’t eat meat as a personal preference. I think it’s gross. And it’s immoral in the way we do it now. Factory farming is a scourge. It is unethical. It is inhumane, it contributes to climate change, it contributes to antibiotic resistance, it contributes to pollution. And the suffering, those animals undergo from birth through slaughter is vile. I think it was Paul McCartney who said that if slaughter houses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. And he’s not wrong about that. There is a difference in raising animals, humanely and sustainably and intelligently and then they have “one bad day“. That is not how it’s done in this country and there is absolutely no reason that justifies or excuses it. This country eats an obscene amount of meat that is destroying the planet, is not always good for yourself given the amount of antibiotics and hormones, and is supremely cruel. There are so many reasons people should at least cut down on their meat consumption. But they choose their own selfish desires or deliberately ignore all of the red flags associated with how we raise meat in this country
I personally know people who raise beef cattle and other animals this way, yes in this country. I will buy half a cow from them and freeze it. You don't know where my meat comes from, but I do. Focus on your own plate.
