It is because violent repeat offenders are not prosecuted and if they are it us too light of a sentence before they are released from jail. There needs to be mandatory incarceration of mentally ill who are convicted or crimes it found not mentally competent. Reed’s criminal record includes nearly 50 prior arrests since 2017, with past convictions for arson, aggravated battery, and assault.
THIS. All of it.
Throwing people in jail seems to have done a great job of preventing crime. /s We have the highest number of incarcerated people in the world and yet still plenty of crime. Throwing people in jail is not working. Maybe fix the actual problems instead of throwing people away.
Doesn’t matter what the actual number is or the percentage - It’s a big country! Let’s try for once to actually arrest offenders and keep all criminals in jail, and you’ll finally see law abiding people breathing freely without the relentless crime around them.
I don't believe this. This has been the idea conservatives have spouted basically since the inception of policing in this country. And never has this crime free utopia materialized. We just have more and more people behind bars, and for-profit prisons profiting. Violent crime is trending downward, yet you all remain afraid of your shadows. How about for once, we do something about the underlying problems?
I’m old enough to remember when it was a democratic president that signed in the Violent Crime Control Act of 1994. Three strikes that lead us to some of the lowest rates of crime at the turn of the century.
No. Crime rates are lower NOW.
Not really. Most crime stats are manipulated now so “nonviolent crimes” are not reported in the numbers. Theft for example Is actually on the rise compared to the 1990s thanks to the Internet and the ability to self checkout. That’s why many stores have items behind glass like CVS
When charges are dropped because the person is mentally ill, then the next time police see someone engaging in a crime or someone wants to file a police report nothing is done. No report is made so it appears crime is lower. And if they are charged it is plead down or dropped due to mental health. Reed had been arrested 72 times. So how many convictions would you think that would be? Well if you guessed a minimal number, you would be correct. He only has 15 convictions. Take this case in February 2020. News reports state, "A 44-year-old man was arrested Friday after punching four women in the face, seemingly at random, near Harold Washington Library in the Loop...The man was punching the women at “random,” and may have struck between five and 10 of them, according to a preliminary report from Chicago police. They had bloody noses and other facial injuries" The article states 4 of the women had to go to the hospital. Additionally, he was arrested the week before for punching a man in the face unprovoked. And what happened after he struck between 5 and 10 women in the face, which required 4 women to go by ambulance to the hospital. Those felony charges were dropped. So they aren't listed in any crime report. But sure tell us all how crime has dropped and we all are so much safer from random violence.
