Ghazala Hashmi wins the Virginia lieutenant governor's race, NBC News projects First female Muslim to win a statewide race. It’s a good night for Va dems
The one who is in favor of the Tysons casino? Yes, great night in VA. /s
I mean, yeah! Defeat MAGA! Woo-boo! But now we have to beat down the craziness that comes with the yahoos we elected (like the casino), so they don’t destroy Tyson’s like Trump destroyed the East Wing.
Casino support seems very uncorrelated to party affiliation
Everyone should be against gambling.
Why? It's a source of revenue, and jobs are disappearing from Virginia like crazy. Obviously, nobody wants gambling addicts, any more than we want to have alcoholics, but no one is against having bars (apart from some religious fundamentalists).
It’s that the “revenue” is largely coming from the people who can least afford to provide it. Everyone hopes to lure the whales when they open a casino, but gambling is fundamentally a poor man’s pastime. I don’t know anyone in my UMC community that goes to MGM or Charlestown for fun. Even Vegas is passé.
I make mid six figures, go to MGM to play poker, and have run into many others in my demographic there (including colleagues from work). Unfortunately, I know that many people are judgmental about this form of entertainment, so I don't talk about it. People find it more acceptable to drop hundreds (if not thousands) on things like Taylor Swift concerts, Commanders tix, the latest "tasting" menu, and so forth. I honestly don't care how people spend their money if they can afford it, but we shouldn't pretend that gambling is the only form of entertainment where poor people spend above their means.
Casinos make 65 to 80% of their revenue from slot machines. That's not high stakes poker.
