you guys are missing the point - for the ivy or bust striver-athletes and their ivy or bust parents, D3 is a difficult pill to swallow - and the Williams name can ease that pain, and is really the only acceptable D3 option for this striver class - along with trumpeting to everyone they know that “Williams has been the #1 ranked liberal arts school for x years”. It’s not about Amherst or Pomona being as good or better (which I believe), it’s solely about the name with this class of folks
You’re delusional. The majority of people have no idea that Williams isn’t a community college somewhere in New England. If you’re in it for the name, you go somewhere else.
Your vote doesn't count and neither does the majority. You are one of the people who just doesn't get it. The people who matter know and those who don't know really don't matter.
Keep telling yourself that to justify dishing out $320K+ for a school no one has even heard of. Can you get any more generic than "Williams"? Maybe "Jones"? You're better off going to Penn State. People have heard of that.
Sure thing….Might want to ask yourself why the top SLACs have higher acceptance rates to med school, law schools, top grad programs, IB, MBB, etc. than virtually any schools outside of HYPSM.
I'm not doubting that these colleges produce graduates who go on to attend prestigious grad schools and do okay in life. That's not my point. My point is that if you're a prestige whore and are interested in impressing people, don't go to Williams. Maybe Amherst is better because people might think it's UMass. Bowdoin? 99% of people can't even pronounce it. The Ivies, Duke, Standford, MIT--people know you're smart. Williams? People nod their head but have no idea that it's a decent school (which it most certainly is).
People who matter know you are smart. It is kind of a good way of sorting people.
