Raising a child shouldn’t be a sacrifice. It’s a privilege. Young children need stability, competence and love. It’s unfortunate that so few children get that.

I agree on the importance of the foundational years and good caregiving during those years.

However it's a sacrifice because our society doesn't value it at all. In other cultures it's not a sacrifice because that work is meaningfully valued and rewarded. In the US, you risk your financial stability by staying home because what happens if your husband leaves you? What happens if he decides he's tired of working and quits or takes a lower paying job and you can't make ends meet? What happens if he gets sick or hurt and can't work? In other cultures, there are structures in place to help and support women in those circumstances. In the US not so much. So staying home is a risk. Hopefully you are lucky and it pays off, but maybe you don't. [/quote]
