I think the issue is that the experience at a lot of these schools is very inconsistent. So a family that got very lucky or unlucky sounds like a booster or hater, but likely they are both relaying their own actual experiences. I have two kids at a popular charter and my rising second grader is having a fundamentally different experience than my fourth grader, just based on the teachers they had and the school's ability to manage the kids in the different cohorts. After five years at the school I couldn't say whether it's "good" or not. It's been both good and bad, but so radically different that it's impossible to generalize.
This is real. We are leaving our school (Title 1 DCPS) this year after a pretty bad 2nd grade experience, but know many families who are staying and can't believe we're leaving. We just have different kids who are having different experiences. We have a non-sporty kid who is super shy and easily embarrassed, and the school's culture is honestly painful for him. Most of the other families we now have more sporty, outgoing kids. I was feeling unsure about our decision because there are so many things we do like about the school, but then went to the end of year assembly and it just confirmed for me that it's not a great environment for my kid. But that's really not a judgment on the school. We visited a ton of schools before entering the lottery and are headed to a charter that is about half the size, with a much quieter vibe and less emphasis on sports, and I think it's going to be a great fit. One school is not better than the other in general, but we think one of them is better for our specific kid.
