My kid is trying out for VSA for the first time this year. He's only done rec before (in another city). He is big but average in speed. Do average players have a chance of getting on a team?
Sure. Who do you think makes up their 3rd,4th teams?
I have no idea how many teams there are, I know next to nothing about travel soccer.
What age group? It seems that VSA is doing what Valor is with their U9 - accept everyone into the pool and then divide based on performance during summer practices. Be careful not to get stuck on a low team. Anything beyond 2nd team is a waste of time and money. Other clubs give you a team invite, not just a general invite to the club.
He's U11. What do you mean, be careful not to get stuck on a low team? Players don't have a say on what team they go to, right?
At U11, they send an offer for an actual team - you can accept or decline. Don’t go beyond 2nd team, they won’t get promoted, doesn’t matter what the coaches tell you. If he’s going to tryouts just tell him to be a ball hog, stay in the front and always try to shoot. Attend more than one try out. Good luck. I hope you get a good offer.
