Trump admin declared that Libraries and museums have no purpose except to brainwash the populace to serve the state. This is real Nazifascist stuff. The new acting director says “We will revitalize IMLS and restore focus on patriotism, ensuring we preserve our country’s core values, promote American exceptionalism and cultivate love of country in future generations.” https://apnews.com/article/institute-doge-musk-museum-library-services-executive-order-trump-30ebde013ce3e9f97e2f4af72c869c0b
*Shrug* Better than promoting queer theory and anti-American groupthink.
Queer people exist. Anti-American group think-you mean learning history? Including the bad parts? Bc if you don’t, you are bound to repeat it. Oh wait… Even if you thought that things had gone too far left—this is your solution?
The problem isn't teaching the bad parts. It's not teaching either the good parts or the broader context. The problem we are having politically is that the "left" wants to only teach the bad parts. The "right" only wants to teach the good parts. And neither wants to teach the context. That's why the swing vote keeps undulating back and forth.
My kids were/are learning the good and bad parts. Where were they only teaching the bad parts?
Honestly, you aren't telling the truth. Thanksgiving is barely taught anymore. If you would like direct and mostly non-controversial examples then I give you the Spanish-American War and Utah Statehood.
Maybe in your crap school your kids don’t learn about Thanksgiving, but mine have been getting parts of the full story since preK - the older they are the more they get. The simplified bowdlerized version you got in ES was not the true story nor the full story. Some people really can’t tell the difference between history and National myth making.
Oh stop it. Aggressively defensive gaslighting is still lying and an example of what the two parties' crazies do. It's why people shut down and why the middle keeps swinging back and forth. And yes, of course it's a myth. A myth based on a vision of what we want the country to be. Not what it was. It has value. Discovering the ways in which we have failed to live up to our ideals is an important part of the learning process but in order for that to work we have to start with the idealized mythological foundation.
DP. This! I explained this my very-liberal DH and he initially disagreed then eventually came around. When we only complain about how bad the US for failing to live up to her ideals, kids hear that. When we start by saying what our ideals are, our aspirations, then later we can say how we have failed them and how we have improved and how much more we can do - and our kids will hear all of it. Start with the myth, the ideal, the aspiration. Then talk about how we aren't there yet and what we can do to move towards it.
There's nothing with a shorter shelf life than children's lit. Our kids can get stories that represent our ideals without regurgitating the same lies we were told. Nothing bad happens if we quit retelling Georgie and a Cherry Tree.
