I don’t go to stores with self checkout.
I can’t imagine how you are finding stores that don’t have self check out. That seems really limiting.
I too was amazed at how it’s quite easy to find these kinds of small businesses here- seems there are many farm markets and orchards and Amish/Mennonite run establishments with great products and great prices. The only limiting factor is most of these kinds of places are a bit out of the way which is fine but the worst is they are never located in the same area. So I just make less frequent but bigger trips and stock up more. What I spend in 30 minutes extra time or gas is covered by savings in other areas (cheaper prices, better quality, supporting local businesses, etc). I have extra time & extra shelf/freezer space though & that extra $5 in gas is not going to break me so if I didn’t have that then it may be more limiting & not worth it. I have been in the place in life where the only stores were big box or out of convenience that’s all I shopped at. I look at it as I’ve tried both ways and at this season of my life it’s worth it to me to spend the extra time and shop local. In other seasons of my life it wouldn’t even be a blip on my radar to go farm market hunting. That’s life.
