For my kid that is what appealed about Tufts (near a city but with its own contained campus, not too big or small) - to be fair, my kid also liked Wesleyan, because it is larger than most of the other nescacs, and Middletown has a little more going on than towns like Middlebury and Waterville.

I think the vibe is pretty similar at both colleges- some kids skew artsy, some skew athlete, and some neither, but all groups are valued (few alpha/frat bro types).

I suspect education and outcomes are quite similar, so I’d view them the same in rank, which you prefer depends on other factors. I think those who view Wes as the “better” are hanging onto its reputation when wasps ruled the NE college scene, and I suspect those who view Tufts as the “better” are influenced by its “university”/science strengths.
