When I think of a lap dog I think of a small breed. Some large dogs do want to climb in your lap, but that isn't exactly comfortable. Especially for a child. I would get a small breed with soft fur. That's a much more pleasant experience than an 80 lb dog trying to climb on you.
Cuddly doesn't mean lap dog. I've had multiple very cuddly fosters - most were respectful of my space, they would curl up next to me on the couch, maybe put their head on my lap and not the whole body. Most cuddly ones were ok with being hugged. Small breeds are often not good with children, none of the cuddly lap Chihuahua mixes in our rescue are cleared to be placed in homes with children under 12. Small dogs are often insecure and prone to fear aggression.
