More cynically (but also optimistically), I think he set Harris up well by staying in as long as he did.  If he'd dropped out 6 months ago, or declined to run at all, Democrats would be very divided on Harris vs other candidates.  By waiting until now to drop out, we are much more ready to unify behind Harris without a food fight on the left.  She comes into this race from a position of strength now, with no primary battle scars.  So what some see as selfishness on his part, for staying in this long - I think his departure was actually well timed.[/quote]
