[/quote] I didn't think Vance claimed he grew up in Appalachia, but rather in a declining part of Ohio where a lot of folks from Appalachia had moved for jobs (bringing some of their Appalachian strengths and weaknesses with them). It's abstract to me. Part of my family grew up in Appalachia (i.e., an area that falls within every definition of Appalachia in the prior map), but they were hard working Scots Irish farmers whose descendants generally left the area (having migrated from Pennsylvania and Virginia) and ended up in other regions of the country with higher paying jobs. Most of them are probably Trump supporters but they don't have the social pathologies of Vance's family. [/quote]
