I can't tell you how many Jews that I know who would shrink up and die of embarrassment if their children did not become doctors or lawyers. I know of one family who disowned their son because he went to the fire academy.
The experiences of individual members of a group do not reflect the experiences of an entire group. (Or, my favorite new DCUM phrase: "The plural of anecdote is not data.") Jewish people I know--whose parents are very proud of them indeed--are teachers, artists, musicians, professors, scientists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and, yes, even doctors and lawyers. Although most lawyers I personally know are Protestant.
Yet there is an old and very wise saying in the legal community; "If you are in real trouble always hire a Jewish lawyer".
Jewish lawyers can be very good lawyers. That doesn't mean that all Jews are lawyers. That's just faulty logic in the context of this conversation.
Its not faulty logic nor does it imply that all Jews are lawyers. The thinking that has been passed on to generations of lawyers is that if you are in serious trouble you better hire a Jewish attorney.
Sure, but that doesn't add anything to THIS conversation, which is about whether or not Jewish parents are upset if their children grow up to be something other than doctors or lawyers. Yes, Jewish people can be awesome lawyers! (Not arguing that with you at all.) But that's not all they can be, nor all their parents may hope for them.
