As an adult its still really hard for me to relax and enjoy a holiday even though I no longer spend holidays with her. When I was a teenager I had my wallet stolen a week before Mother's Day so didn't buy her a present (because I had no access to money) and ultimately gave her a present a few days after Mother's Day when my paycheck cleared and she still brings it up almost 30 years later as the year I ruined Mother's Day. We had Christmas mornings when I was a kid where my dad didn't interpret her Christmas list well so the entire charade of opening presents under the tree would be cancelled. Any career success or vacations I take are an embarassment to her because I should have prioritized living near her and being loyal. Its endless and exhausting.[/quote]
