I don't agree that people don't have access to a college education. Most people can't afford a private education, but they can afford a BA or BS from a state school, even if they have to earn it one class at a time. If you are so poor that you can't afford to pay for one class at a time, then you will qualify for pell grants and loans.  College is the US is expensive, but there are ways to get it.

That's not about access. That's about choosing not to go to college. That 19 year old would be better off to take a Pell Grant and borrow the remaining entire cost of the local state university, including living expenses, and work a part-time job. In most cases, the amount of money to live on for the family would be the about the same.

I know people who bought 1 class at a time. I know people who didn't start until they were 25. I know people who went in the military and the military paid for their classes while they were still in. There are lots of ways to do it.  [/quote]
