My DD got off the waitlist at Duke yesterday. She was really getting excited about the idea of attending UVA, so it's a tough decision. It's going to be tough to swing financially for us, so I'm thinking she'll decline.
Duke is well worth it if you can swing it
Duke is now $89 a year. UVA College of Arts & Sciences in-state is $38. Thats a delta of $51 in after-tax dollars, meaning you have to go out and make $80 to pay the delta. $80k x 4 = $320k extra for Duke. Instead, go to UVA and bank the difference and let it compound and pay for grad school. Thats what we did so can now afford a top law school at an obscene $110k a year.
I think Duke and UVA will read the same way outside the DMV (elite, Southern). Is your daughter likely to return to DC for work? If so, local opinions will apply. UVA will be fine to get into grad school per PP's experience above. If your daughter is happy with UVA's offerings, I would stick with Plan A.
