If OP's daughter's friend reciprocated this wouldn't be a problem.   It is not the paying, but the one-sided nature.

They have no obligation to reciprocate.  OP is choosing the activities, not the family.  So, if they cannot afford it, it's fine for them to say no.  You don't ask other families to pay for expensive activities knowing its not in their budget.[/quote]
