Gladstone gave a more subtle and restrained performance, and the academy members often vote for bigger, showier performances like Stone's instead. In fact, the same thing happened when Glenn Close was widely expected to win Best Actress for The Wife, which was a masterpiece of subtlety, but Olivia Colman took the award for The Favourite, in which she squawked and screamed the whole movie. Both Stone and Colman were directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.[/quote]
