In college I dated a guy who was much more attractive and “popular” than I was. I was cute, don’t get me wrong, but he usually dated more generically attractive and skinnier women. he pursued me, I wasn’t interested because I assumed he was a jerk.and we ended up actually having a ton in common and a great friendship before we dated. Similar to one day, I would say it was about our chemistry and connection. We just clicked. Didn’t work out for other reasons. And fwiw he ended up marrying someone less attractive than me in the long run. I know several guys who married less attractive women. One woman had a lot of family money. The other is super successful and ambitious so it was actually kind of puzzling but he seems to love her and I can imagine his personality/ego being a lot to live with.
It’s not about attractiveness but about that and personality. Emma as depicted was a really heavy going
Pp here. I think a lot of Emma’s “heavy goingness” was insecurity. Things didn’t just work out for her because she was attractive, charming and from a well off family. She had to prove herself every step of the way, which is why she was more jaded than Dexter. I assume Dexter was attracted to Emma’s groundedness and direction. Ok some level, attractive people like Dexter (and the one I dated) can have major imposter syndrome and self worth issues. Being liked - and related to- by someone who was together and smart probably validated him in some way too. There’s a great 30 rock episode on this topic where Tina fey dates Jon hamm, who lives a charmed existence because of his good looks.
Please read the critiques by art critics. The show has Shakespearean undertones. Even religious ones. Dec falls from grace. Emma is his penance. Had there been no atonement there would have been no interest in Emma as there hadn’t been for decades. Plus I didn’t see anyone else lining up.
