The other thing I will add is that there are some shockingly bad estate lawyers out there. My MIL sent DH and his sibling a copy of the will her lawyer drafted. Her intent was to just split things 50/50. What came back was many pages of ridiculous crap. There were requirements for yearly drug testing of grandchildren if they were to get money. None of the adult grandchildren have done drugs, all are successful. There were requirements that a vacation home be turned into a bed and breakfast run by DH and sibling who each would be responsible for maintaining the historical and existing character of the house and reside there a minimum of three months. There was a requirement to maintain several STRs as STRs and invest any profits in buying additional ones nearby or remodeling improving the existing ones. There was a ton of stuff that would require third party oversight. The lawyer was charging her several thousand to write this. I don’t know if he was setting himself up to be a trustee or what nonsense. We and DH’s sibling said no. You can put whatever you want in a will but we don’t have to accept and would walk away from the money before becoming innkeepers at some undetermined point in our life.
