There are so many people on this board and in this society who won’t care about these deaths or others like them - taking drugs means you get what you get, they think, and you don’t have grounds to complain. Having Narcan on hand is good, but a person rendered unconscious by opioids doesn’t have the capacity to rescue themselves with Narcan never mind their friends. This is why we need safe sites for drug use, but even if we had them people like these guys wouldn’t go. They should have had a designated friend on hand who wasn’t going to use and could be capable of rescuing or at least calling 911.
The worst part of this mindset is that it is often their kid or grandchild who experiments a few times and is accidentally poisoned by fentanyl. The kid took a black market Vicodin for legit pain or Ritalin to study for finals and they die while alone. And while self-adminstration of Narcan is not foolproof, it's way more common than people realize or doctors will admit. No government agency or doctor will recommend you rely on self-administration, because you should have a sober monitoring the individuals. But how many people using drugs actually do that? Rarely. The situation about fentanyl safety reminds me a lot of the uproar about schools providing condoms to kids back in the 90s and early 00s - "You're only encouraging bad behavior!" We want people to be safe and young people will continue to do risky things.
