Most neighbors have mentioned they’ve seen peanut shells on their property. The squirrels are getting the food there and the dragging it back to their expanding rodent kingdom along the street. We see peanut shells regularly in our yard. I wish I knew why the squirrels like our deck. We see them there during the day often. What I’ve learned from the post is that people have different tolerances for exploding rodent populations. I’m strictly in the “leave them alone and let them fend for themselves as nature intended category.”
Most likely they come to your deck during the afternoons. In the afternoons, on sunny days, the wood will absorb more heat/sunlight and will radiate the heat. Also, since the deck is suspended above the ground, the ground will not leech the heat away as quickly. The wood/Trex will be warmer than anything touching the ground. So, they collect the food, and come to sit/eat on the deck that is warmer. There are squirrel repellents that you can buy and you can find ways to hang them off the deck railings or put them in small wire cages around the deck. During warmer weather, there are flowers and plants that have odors that are unpleasant for squirrels and you can plant them around the deck or plant them in planters around the deck. Last, there are ultrasonic rodent/squirrel repellents that you can get and put around your deck.
